Private tours of Castello Sforzesco

Private tours
Two options are private: a 2-hour tour starting at the fountain and ending in front of the Pietà, and a skip-the-line tour from 2 to 5 hours with one licensed guide per group of 1 to 9 people. Both include museum entry with the guide. The differences lie in the longer versions with a private car and the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, the nine-person rule, and a clause on the minimum number that should be read before booking.

The two-hour private tour

Two hours, private tour, guide and audio guides, museum entry includedAvailable in English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and Russian. The meeting point is in Piazza Castello in front of the main entrance, at the fountain: the one Milanese call the “wedding cake,” dating from 1936, removed in the 1960s and rebuilt in 1999/2000. The route crosses the fortress, its years as a barracks, the dukes’ private apartments, Beltrami’s restoration, and ends in front of the Pietà Rondanini. It’s the reverse order of the small-group tour, which starts at the Pietà; here it’s the finale.

The listing advises against it for those with back problems, as it involves moderate walking for two hours across multiple levels; comfortable shoes and water are recommended. Transport to the meeting point is not included. Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance.

Important: a minimum number of participants applies. The operator may cancel even after confirmation if there are too few people, offering an alternative or a refund. For a tour sold as private, this is a strange line, which is why I’m quoting it in full: if you’re a couple and the date is fixed, bear it in mind. The full listing it puts it in context.

Private tour with skip-the-line access, in four versions

Private, licensed guide, skip-the-line tickets to the museums in all versions. A guide accompanies 1 to 9 people, per museum rules; for groups larger than nine, additional guides are booked. Available in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Russian. The four versions:

The car is a sedan for up to 4 people and a van for 5 or more. Inside the castle, the itinerary covers the courtyards, the Torre del Filarete, the Cortile delle Armi, the Ospedale Spagnolo with Michelangelo’s final work, the Ducal Halls, the Ducal Chapel, the Treasure Room, the armory, the furniture, the musical instruments, and paintings by Mantegna, Canaletto, Titian, and Tintoretto. The list also includes the Sala delle Asse: it is closed for restoration, and no guide can get us in. The Sala delle Asse explains the current state of the restoration work.

The time slot is reserved, there are security checks, and the description warns that “parts of the castle may be closed for maintenance” and that visits to the basilica are limited during services. Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. The full description has the details version by version.

Skip-the-line for what

It’s worth being honest about this: the museum ticket for the Castello Sforzesco doesn’t sell out. You can buy it at the ticket office until 16:30 and in the civic museums’ online shop. The queue you skip is the one at the ticket office, which really does exist on Saturday late mornings and the first Sunday of the month, and much less so on other weekdays. What you get with this option is a guide dedicated to your group, a reserved time slot, and, in the longer versions, the car and Sant’Ambrogio. Online or at the ticket office think about the rest.

If you don’t need it to be private

The small-group Pietà tour, an hour and a half with headsets for up to 11 people and admission included, does the same thing with others, and can also be booked as a private tour. Guided tours they describe it.

What works

  • A licensed guide all to yourself for your group, up to nine people
  • Four durations, with or without a car, with or without Sant’Ambrogio
  • Russian, which no group tour offers
  • The two-hour tour ends in front of the Pietà, as a finale
  • Both can be canceled for free up to 24 hours in advance

Good to know

  • The private tour may be canceled by the operator due to insufficient numbers
  • For groups over nine people, more guides are required
  • The Sala delle Asse is on the list but is closed for restoration
  • The two-hour tour is not recommended for those with back problems
  • On Mondays, no version has an open museum
Tip

If you are ten, the museum rule splits you into two groups with two guides, and the listing accounts for this. If you are four with a car, a sedan suffices; from five upwards it’s a van. How to get there for those who choose the versions without a car.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a private tour of Castello Sforzesco?

Yes, two options are private. A 2-hour tour with a guide and radio guides, in six languages, starting from the fountain in Piazza Castello and ending in front of the Pietà Rondanini. And a skip-the-line tour of 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours with one licensed guide per 1–9 people, including a private car and Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in the longer versions. The Pietà small-group tour can also be booked privately. The comparison lines them up.

How many people can one guide accompany in the castle?

In the private skip-the-line tour, one guide accompanies 1 to 9 people, per museum rules; for groups larger than nine, additional guides must be booked. In the small-group tour, headsets cover up to 11 people. The private car in the longer versions is a sedan for up to 4 and a van for 5 or more. The full details list the four versions.

Can the private tour be canceled?

The 2-hour tour can: the details state that a minimum number applies and the operator may cancel after confirmation if there are too few participants, offering an alternative or a refund. For the rest, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before for both private options. The private tour details include the clause.

Does the private tour show Leonardo’s Sala delle Asse?

No. The room is listed in the skip-the-line tour, but it is closed for restoration, with the aim of reopening around the Winter Olympics; the details themselves warn that parts of the castle may be closed for works. What you’re guaranteed to see is Michelangelo’s Pietà. The Sala delle Asse covers the restoration.
