Castello Sforzesco: online or at the ticket office?

Online or at the ticket office
At the ticket office, in most cases. The single museum ticket is bought at the Castello Sforzesco ticket office or in the Civic Museums online shop; it doesn’t sell out, and that’s where the free entries apply: under 18s, first Sunday of the month, second Tuesday for under 25s. Online options make sense for two things the ticket office doesn’t offer: an app-based audioguide with a reserved time slot, or a real live guide.

What the castle sells at the entrance

A single ticket for all museums and exhibitions, up to nine per transaction, also online at the Civic Museums shop; an Open ticket valid for twelve months; discounts for ages 18–25, over 65s, and university students; free for under 18s, people with disabilities plus one companion, teachers with documentation, ICOM members, and licensed guides. Plus the castle’s audioguide, available at the entrance, and the Merlate panoramiche on weekends, included. In six seasons at the ticket office, I’ve never seen a day when tickets were sold out. Free admission: who qualifies and when.

What the online options add

The six options fall into three types, and it’s worth knowing which is which before clicking. The first type is the same museum ticket with an audio guide in the app: one option includes the castle audio guide and another for the city, in six languages, with the voucher to be exchanged at the office at Piazza Castello 1; the other includes an option to climb the roofs, via stairs, with pickup in the city. Neither is a guided tour, whatever the word tour may suggest. The second type is a guide-led experience: the small-group visit of one and a half hours starting from the Pietà, the private two-hour tour, and the private skip-the-line tour lasting two to five hours. The third type is the Last Supper tour with a walk through the courtyards, which does not enter the museums. The six options, sorted by type.

When the ticket office is better

If you have children under 18, if it’s the first Sunday of the month, if you’re under 25 on the second Tuesday, if you don’t need an audioguide, if you’re not sure what time you’ll arrive, if it’s a Tuesday afternoon in November and the Castello Sforzesco is half-empty. That is, almost always. Buy at the door or on the Musei Civici shop, go in, and see the Pietà Rondanini first.

When to book online

If you want history brought to life: the guided tour the small-group tour is the real value of this guide, because an authorized guide in front of the Pietà Rondanini is the one thing the ticket office can’t give you. If you want an audio guide app in your language and a reserved time slot, the ticket with audio guide does that, provided you know the voucher is exchanged at Piazza Castello 1. If you’re nine or fewer and want a guide just for your group, with a car or via Sant’Ambrogio, the private skip-the-line tourdoes. If the priority is the Last Supper, the Last Supper tour, knowing that the castle part is a free walk.

Tip

At the castle, 'skip the line' means a reserved time slot, not a privilege against a queue that usually doesn’t exist. The real queue is on the first Sunday of the month, but then you can’t buy online.

What works

  • The ticket office ticket won’t sell out
  • Free and reduced tickets are only available at the ticket office
  • Online you can buy the one thing the ticket office doesn’t have: a guide

Good to know

  • Tours with audio guides are picked up at Piazza Castello 1, not at the castle
  • The Last Supper tour does not enter the museums
  • All closed on Mondays, like the museums

If you choose the ticket with audio guide

Reserved entry to the museums with two audio guides in the app, in six languages, voucher to exchange at the office at Piazza Castello 1, free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. You bring your own headphones and charged phone.
