How to get to Castello Sforzesco

By metro
Cairoli-Castello on the red line is the stop with the right name and the exit right by the fountain: two or three minutes and you’re under the tower. Cadorna FN serves both M1 and M2 and leads to the park-side entrance, the one I use when I arrive on a regional train, since Cadorna is also a railway station. Lanza on the green line drops you on the Brera side, with a few extra minutes. Above ground, trams 1, 2, 4, 12, 14 and 27 and buses 50, 57, 58, 61 and 94 stop nearby, and there are several BikeMi stations around the square.
On foot from the Duomo
One kilometer, a quarter of an hour, almost all straight: from Piazza del Duomo you take Via Dante, a pedestrian street, and the tower appears at the end of the road from your very first steps. It’s the simplest connection in Milan, and there’s no reason to take transport. The route from the Duomo, in detail.
The two entrances
The main one is the Torre del Filarete on Piazza Castello: you pass under the arch and enter the Piazza d’Armi. This is also where the ticket offices are—the castle’s own and the office at Piazza Castello 1 where online vouchers are exchanged: two different counters, and it’s worth knowing which one you needThe other entrance is on the Cadorna and Parco Sempione side, quieter, with the dry moat and brick walls in front; it’s convenient if you’re coming from the park or the train.
The meeting points for guided tours are in Piazza Castello, in front of the main entrance by the fountain. The Last Supper tour, however, departs from Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie 2, in front of the Cenacolo museum, a quarter of an hour’s walk away: do not go to the castle.
By car
Not recommended. The city center has traffic restrictions and the square has no dedicated parking. The only option that includes a car is the skip-the-line private tour in the 3-hour and 5-hour versions, with a private car that picks you up and drops you off, about 1 hour of travel each way, sedan for up to four people and van for five or more. Private tours and versions with a car.
Where to meet if you have booked
The ticket with audioguide is collected at the office at Piazza Castello 1, with staff at the meeting point. The small-group visit and the private tour meet in Piazza Castello, the private tour in front of the main entrance at the fountain. The other ticket with audioguide and Merlate panoramiche option is collected in the city and meets in Piazza Castello. Only the Last Supper departs from another location. The day, step by step.
